IBM Maximo alternatives: how to compare your options
The short answer
Common IBM Maximo alternatives include enterprise EAM suites such as IFS Cloud and HxGN EAM, asset management inside ERP suites from SAP and Oracle, lighter CMMS tools such as Fiix, UpKeep and Limble, and newer AI-native platforms such as Nexaform EAM. The right choice depends on how complex your estate is, how customized your Maximo is and what you need that it does not give you. For many organizations, upgrading to MAS or adding AI to the current system is still the better answer.
A note before you read: we build Nexaform EAM, so we have a stake in this topic. We also work on IBM Maximo and build AI agents that run on it, so we do not need you to switch. We have kept this guide general, and you should check current capabilities with each vendor.
Why teams look for a Maximo alternative
- End of support. Maximo 7.6 support has ended, which makes this the natural moment to review the choice.
- Upgrade effort. MAS runs on Red Hat OpenShift, with new AppPoints licensing and customizations to review.
- Cost to run. Licensing, hosting and specialist skills add up, particularly for smaller estates.
- Slow change. Routine changes to forms, statuses or approvals may have to wait for a specialist.
- Usability. Technicians and planners may want simpler screens and better mobile tools.
The main types of alternative
| Type | Examples | Usually fits when | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise EAM suites | IFS Cloud, HxGN EAM | You have complex, multi-site estates and need similar depth | Migration effort, licensing and how much specialist support it needs |
| ERP-based asset management | SAP, Oracle | The business already runs on that ERP and wants one platform | Whether maintenance teams get the tools and usability they need |
| CMMS tools | Fiix, UpKeep, Limble | Your needs centre on work orders and preventive maintenance | Hierarchies, approvals, procurement and reporting at your scale |
| AI-native EAM platforms | Nexaform EAM | You want tier-one scope, no-code configuration and AI built in | Fit against your processes, using your own data in a demo |

Five questions to settle it
- What problem are you solving? If it is cost, usability or AI, you may be able to fix it without replacing the system.
- How customized is your Maximo? Count Java classes, automation scripts and integrations. Each one needs a new home.
- How much history must move? Decide what you migrate, what you archive and what auditors need to see.
- Who will run it? Compare the specialist skills each option needs with the people you have.
- Can you prove the fit? Ask vendors to demonstrate your hardest processes on your own data, not a scripted demo.
What a switch really involves
Moving to a new EAM is more than a data migration. Asset registers, hierarchies, job plans, PM schedules and history all have to move and be validated. Integrations need rebuilding, reports need replacing and people need retraining. It is worth doing when the fit is clearly better, and rarely worth doing to escape one upgrade.
When staying on Maximo is the better choice
Maximo may still be right if it is deeply embedded, your processes depend on its depth and your team knows it well. In that case, plan the move to MAS 9. You can also add AI without replacing anything, using agents such as Perimo Asset Agents that work through Maximo’s own APIs.
